Water is awesome. It’s also essential for our survival. It’s easy to forget to drink water when we’re going about our day with all the different things keeping us busy or distracting us. But the quality of our day can be changed drastically by something as seemingly simple as forgetting to drink some water every now and then.
Especially now that the weather is getting hotter with summer approaching, it’s very important to make drinking water a regular habit throughout your day. Being well hydrated helps your brain and body work better and it can prevent headaches and tiredness caused by dehydration.
I’m usually pretty good about drinking water regularly during the day, but sometimes I find myself deep in work and hours fly by without stopping to drink water. I’ve found that keeping a cup full of water at my desk and filing it back up as soon as it gets empty helps me stay hydrated especially during busy days. Taking my last sip of water is the cue to fill up my cup so I can keep drinking water whenever I start to get thirsty. If I don’t fill up my cup right away, I’ll often try and sip from it, realize it’s empty, and keep working. As a result, when this happens, I’ll usually end up not drinking any water for several hours despite being thirsty.
Fun (or not so fun) fact, I’d guess about half of my headaches are due to dehydration. I drink water lots, but when I forget for too long, my body makes sure to tell me. If you get headaches often, maybe the fix is as simple as drinking more water. Another bonus of filling up my cup regularly is that it forces me to get up and move around. Even a short trip to the kitchen for a refill is better than nothing.
Given how much of our bodies are made up of water, it’s kind of amazing how easy it is to forget to stay hydrated. Regardless of if you notice or not, drinking water is super important. If you haven’t had water recently, take this as a reminder to go drink some! And start building those healthy habits like drinking water regularly.
Bonus tip: if you find yourself forgetting to drink water during the day, try challenging yourself to take a small sip of water every time you check your phone. You’ll drink lots of water and the increased awareness may help you check your phone less.
