The law of physics that goes “an object in motion remains in motion” is true not just for physical objects but also for intangible things like motivation and inspiration. In other words, when you build and maintain momentum, it’s a lot easier to keep going be it physically or mentally. Momentum. It’s like a superpower!
Momentum is magical because we can build and maintain with tiny actions, and it makes bigger actions a lot easier. It also makes us less resistant to start and do bigger actions. For example, if you walk on a treadmill for 5 minutes every day, you’re building your moving around regularly momentum and it becomes a lot easier to change 5 minutes into 10, 15, or 30 minutes. Maybe you even walk for an hour on one day when you’re really feeling it! Even if you go back to 5 minutes every day, whenever you feel like walking longer, it’s easier! You are also more likely to remain consistent.
Momentum makes bigger tasks easier to start and finish. It also motivates us to keep going. If you’re an aspiring writer and you focus on just writing one sentence each day, you’ll find yourself looking forward to writing that sentence more the longer you stick with it.
The power of momentum is awesome. We should harness its power to help us accomplish our goals and live healthier. Remember, leverage tiny actions consistently to build momentum that helps us tackle big actions.
Personally, I’m working on getting into better shape. I’m focusing on just moving around more everyday and getting up early enough to walk my dog before it gets too hot. Walking regularly and even just wiggling more throughout the day makes it easier to keep moving regularly and do half an hour of yoga or pilates some mornings.
Think of momentum like a snowball rolling down a steep hill. Even if the snowball starts tiny, it packs on more and more snow as it goes until it’s a giant boulder of snow that can easily knock down a giant bowling pin at the bottom of the hill. The snowball is still made of tiny pieces of snow. The accumulation of all those tiny pieces makes it powerful!
What will you use momentum to accomplish?
