My daily routine tends to be very sedentary and most of my time is spent indoors. As a programmer, pretty much all my work occurs at my desk. While I do sometimes stand to work, most of the time is spent sitting.

I take my dog for a walk every morning and we’ll sometimes sit in the sun during a break or after work before the sun sets. These moments of sunlight and our morning walks have reinforced the value of sunlight and movement in daily life. Especially for someone like me who spends so much time sitting indoors.

It’s easy to forget to take breaks and move around throughout the day when you’re focused on getting things done. However, I’ve found that being intentional about getting up and taking a quick walk around the house or taking my dog out to go potty more regularly has helped me both physically and mentally.

Moving more throughout the day has made my brain work better when I sit down and focus. It’s also helped my neck and shoulders be less stiff and sore. Taking time to sit and enjoy the sunlight has helped me feel more relaxed, calm, and present.

Movement and sunlight are both important to our health. Taking the time to incorporate regular movement, even small amounts like just walking around the house a little, and spending time in the sun every day can help you be healthier and more efficient at work.

Especially if your job is very sedentary like mine, taking regular breaks to stand up and stretch can have a huge impact on your health and your mind.

I’ve been fighting off a cold recently, but continuing to take regular short breaks to move and stretch and spending more time in the sun has helped me remain present and focused on work.

If you spend most of your time sitting indoors, take this as your sign to get up, move around, and enjoy a bit of sunlight.

When was the last time you sat in the sun, no technology, and just enjoyed the moment?
